SWARAJ DWEEP ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS
Swaraj Dweep at Andaman and Nicobar islands was earlier called as Havelock Island until 30 December 2018. However, during the 75th Anniversary of declaring the Andaman Islands as the first place to be freed from British territory, Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi changed the name of Havelock Island to Swaraj Dweep.
Various letters were written by the local island people to not change the name, however, the name was changed from Havelock Island to Swaraj Dweep.
REASON FOR NAME CHANGE - Havelock Island was named after a British General Sir Henry Havelock who had killed hundreds of Indians Soldiers. Well, that is a strong reason for the name change. However, for people who protested the change were people who mainly thought it's wise to keep the name unchanged as Swaraj Dweep is the most popular tourist destination in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The family of various freedom fighters who were sentence to the Cellular Jail were also present at the Andaman Islands on 30 December 2018.
WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE THE NAME CHANGE - Technically, Swaraj Dweep operates in the same was as it used to when it was Havelock Island. So for travellers it's not much of a problem except that Havelock sounded more fancy than Swaraj Dweep. The take is on you whether to call it Havelock Island or Swaraj Dweep. Officially its Swaraj Dweep.
